The Mozartsaal-Lichtspiele was part of the Theater am Nollendorfplatz, built in 1905-1906. Its style was labeled modern, with elements of Art Nouveau. Right across the street, there was another important cinema: the Ufa Pavillon am Nollendorfplatz.
The Mozartsaal, upstairs in the building, was originally a concert hall, but in 1911 it was transformed into the "First Huge Cinema for a Select Public". Even though it was not designed or intended as a cinema,
it was a well known and much visited venue, which made it
influential on future cinema design.
In
1930, the premiere of the pacifist film All Quiet on the Western Front took place at the Mozartsaal, a premiere disrupted by a Nazi mob led by Goebbels and which ultimately led to the prohibition of the film in Germany.
