Helmuth Macke

1913

Helmuth Macke (1891-1936) studied from 1906 to 1909 at the Krefeld School of Arts and Crafts. His comrades were Heinrich Campendonk and Walter Giskes, with whom he opened a studio in 1908. In 1909, he met Franz Marc, who invited him to his summer home. Was it Marc's paintings which inspired the one above with the horses?

From 1910 to 1911, he was in contact with the circle of the Blue Rider and in 1912 he met in Berlin Erich Heckel, founder of Die Brücke.

In 1929, he received the Prix de Rome. During his stay at Villa Massimo in Rome, he lives with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Georg Schrimpf and Heinrich Ehmsen.

In 1933, he moved to Hemmenhofen, near Lake Constance. He died in a boating accident in 1936.

He was a cousin of the painter August Macke.
