1929
Otto Nagel (1894-1967) was a German painter born in Berlin-Wedding, a working-class neighbourhood. Still young, he joined the Communist Party which he never left. He married a Russian actress. During the Nazi regime he was imprisoned. After the war, he settled in the GDR, the Soviet controlled part of Germany. Not an easy choice to make, but then he had all his life been a staunch marxist-leninist. Whatever one may think of that now defunct state, Nagel, born in a working-class district, died in what some thought a workers' paradise, was always true to his ideals.
