Malik-Verlag
was an avant-garde publishing house founded in Berlin in 1917 by
Wieland Herzfelde (1896-1988). It was known for its connection to the
Dada movement and it was named after the novel Der Malik by the
Expressionist writer Else Lasker-Schüler. It also published books of
history, fiction, and theory, typically marked by a leftist political
agenda.
Some
of the book-covers of Malik-Verlag were done by George Grosz, John
Heartfield (brother of Wieland Herzfelde) and other avant-garde
artists. Malik-Verlag’s books occupied a conspicuous place in the
infamous book-burning of May 10, 1933 by the Nazis.
