Babylon Berlin

Babylon Berlin is aGerman TV series based on crime novels by Volker Kutscher. The action is located in Berlin 1929, under the Weimar Republic. The main character is Police Inspector Gereon Rath, who has just been transferred from Cologne to Berlin.
The premiere of the series took place on October 13, 2017 on Sky 1, a German-language channel broadcast by Sky Deutschland. The first novel in Volker Kutscher's novels is Der Nasse Fisch.

It is one of the most expensive television series ever made, having cost nearly $ 40 million. It was done by Tom Tykwer, Hendrik Handloegten and Achim von Borries, who also wrote the scripts.

Two seasons, sixteen episodes in all, were shot. A third season is reported to be in progress.

Beyond the police intrigue itself, the series describes the daily life of different social classes, from the misery of overcrowded buildings for workers (mietskasernen) to the opulence of the wealthy classes of the capital of the Republic. It is also about the bustling nightlife of Berlin's "golden years" as well as political conflicts, which often result in assassinations. Some of the characters belong to the far-left, communist and Trotskyist groups, while others are on the radical right (monarchists who dream of restoring the Empire and replacing the President of the Republic by the Kaiser). Without forgetting the Nazis.

The series is a great success. The reconstruction of time is very accomplished. If it were not for the colors and the modern cinematographic language, one would believe the episodes made by a Fritz Lang. The series is absolutely recommended for anyone interested in Weimar Berlin.
